National Drink Wine Day
Well, I don't know about you but I sure had a good evening last night. Of course, I had a rough morning to go along with it, but I am about to open another bottle here soon to take the edge off.
It all started with a poor showing by the Ole Miss Rebels basketball team. Losing to Vanderbilit in the closing minutes. Not something that needs to be discussed here.
Two pinots were enjoyed last night. One from California and one from Oregon. Typically, I always love an Oregon pinot. They Old World tends to come out a little more and show more of the terroir so to speak. That being said I love Cali too. Hell, I am trying to move there.
I will start with the Pahlmeyer 2005 Sonoma Coast. It was my favorite this evening. Held its own in the glass. Pretty with light sides. Berry/Floral on the nose. Got a hit of acidity on the back of the throat at the end of the sniff. Light but a little heavier than normal. Incredibly smooth up front with fruit and earth but a great acidity on the finish to balance it out. This was right up my alley.
The one from Oregon is a favorite of mine. The 2006 Beaux Freres is one that I enjoy ever so often. My father in law keeps them around. Deep color in the glass. The nose resembles what's in the mouth with a nice earthy yet fruit balance. The smoothness in the mouth was remarkable. However, it really got rough toward the end of the bottle. Something I don't see a whole lot.
Between these two my favorite last night was the Pahlmeyer. It hit all the right buttons and made me appreciate what a good pinot can be.
