Put on your '60s tye-dies and come on a little trip for your tastebuds! If Willy Wonka had created a fruit, this would be it!

Miracle Fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum), sometimes known as the Miracle Berry, is a plant native to West Africa. The plant was first documented in 1725, when explorers in West Africa observed the local tribes picking the berries and chewing them before meals, perhaps to make their food more palatable. The berry has a mildly sweet flavor; however, the fruit is treasured not for its own taste, but for the fruit’s unique effect on the taste buds. Miracle Fruit contains a compound which binds to the tongue’s tastebuds when the fruit is chewed and acts as a sweetness inducer when it comes in contact with acids, causing bitter and sour foods to taste sweet, temporarily. This effect usually lasts between 30 minutes and 2 hours.

We will eat the berries, then try a variety of sour and bitter foods -- such as lemons, radishes, and beer -- to experience the dramatic change in taste. I will provide the berries (2 each) and a few foods to taste (thus the $10 cost; $11 w/PayPal). Not sure how wine or other foods will hold up, but feel free to bring anything you would like to experiment with.

Miracle Fruit has no known adverse effects. Western civilization has known about the fruit for over 275 years and no harmful effects have been documented.
