I want to thank VinVillage for the opportunity to attend the Summer Celebration at the Seghesio Ranch this past Saturday. First I would like to note that this event was top notch from beginning to end. It, unlike other events I’ve attended, was perfectly planned. No wait to check in, no wait for the food and best of all, no wait to taste wine from around 60 different wineries. There was plenty of time to talk to the representatives and winemakers. Speaking of winemakers, I spent around fifteen minutes with Joel Peterson from Ravenswood. No slouching here. Joel was pouring a 1994 Old Vine Zin along with the 2013 vintage. For those of you that say Zin doesn’t age well…you’re wrong! Joel kinda laughed when I took that first taste. It was fantastic. Great structure, balance, fruit and ultra-fine tannins from this 20 year old Zin! I also had some time with Tegan Passalacqua from Turley. He was also pouring great Turley wines such as Juvenile along with Alexander Sonoma Valley juice. Another vintner that I thought hit it out of the box was Beekeeper. They had two Zins at the event, , both 2012’s, one from Napa’s Howell Mountain and one from Sonoma’s Rockpile. While I’ve always been a fan of Rockpile wines from the like of Valdez and Rosenblum, I must say the Napa was the winner. It was elegant, smooth and just plain happiness in a bottle. There are so many things I could talk about from the great juice from Mazzocco, The Ridge, Wilson and many others, but unless you were there or can taste the juice via the internet, what would be the use. Great job ZAP and VinVillage!!!
