1st segment of this weeks Show: Southern Foodways Alliance Oral History Interships in Food Cultures of the American South - Amy Evans Streeter

The Southern Foodways Alliance (SFA) documents, studies, and celebrates the diverse food cultures of the changing American South. The Oral History Initiative seeks to capture stories of Southerners who grow, create, serve, and consume food and drink. In-House Internships are prearranged, structured learning experiences usually lasting one to two weeks. A Guided Internship at the SFA offers the opportunity to pursue either an oral history or multi-media project based in any location within the South. Applications for 2011 Internships are due February 1, 2011. Amy Evans Streeter, Oral Historian, is the main contact at SFA for oral history internships and project submissions at University of Mississippi, Oxford.

2nd segment of this weeks Show: Southern Foodways Alliance 2011 Theme "The Cultivated South" - Amy Evans Streeter

Southern Foodways Alliance stages symposia on food culture, produces documentary films, publishes compendiums of great writing, and—perhaps most importantly—preserves, promotes, and chronicles the region’s culinary standard bearers. They’re talking white tablecloth chefs and fried chicken cooks, barbecue pitmasters and peanut farmers. Integral to an appreciation and understanding of the diverse food cultures of the American South is the collection and preservation of the stories behind the food. The SFA is a member-supported organization of more than 800 people. Chefs and academics, writers and eaters: all are active participants.
