WineFairy chats with Charles & Emmanuel Fourny of Champagne Veuve Fourny; Lawrence Mawby of L. Mawby Winery; and Penelope Gadd-Coster of Rack and Riddle on Crushpad Sparkling Wines

First segment of this weeks Show: Haute Couture Champagne Veuve Fourny Specializes in Complex Old Vineyard Chardonnay - Charles and Emmanuel Fourny

Champagne Veuve Fourny has been in the family since 1856, with Charles and his brother Emmanuel, both relatively young, currently in charge. Their widowed mother is still active at the domaine, while their father Roger is memorialized by their "Cuvee R." Charles runs the marketing and sales of the domaine while Emmanuel is in charge of winemaking. Based in the village of Vertus on the Cotes des Blancs, the Fournys have extensive Chardonnay holdings and favor a very low dosage (extra brut "very dry" style). They also vinify some of their Pinot Noir in wood, which is used in the production of their rose (15 percent).

Second segment of this weeks Show: Deliciousness Comes From Unexpected Places... L. Mawby Methode Champenoise Wines from Suttons Bay - Lawrence Mawby

Lawrence Mawby, Founder and Winemaker, L. Mawby winery and vineyards of Suttons Bay, Michigan's goal has always been to make wines that express the unique soil and climate in which they grow. He began producing estate grown and bottled Leelanau Peninsula wines in the fall of 1978. All of the L. Mawby sparkling wines are made using the methode champenoise, and are aged in the bottle before disgorging, with many cuvees being given 3 or more years of tirage aging. M. Lawrence sparkling wines are produced in the cuve close method, are given less aging, and are less costly than the method champenoise sparkling wines. Mawby is the current President of the Leelanau Peninsula Vintner's Association.

Third segment of this weeks Show: M. Lawrence Sex, Fizz, and Wet Heighten Food and Entertainment Value from Michigan - Lawrence Mawby

Lawrence Mawby first planted vines in the spring of 1973. Today, vineyards cover about 13 acres, with additional five acres planted in the spring of 2007. The vineyards today include the direct producer varieties vignoles and seyval and the vinifera varieties pinot noir, pinot gris, chardonnay, and pinot meunier. Vignoles is a hardy, distinctively flavored variety that is used in the Cremant [100 percent vignoles].Pinot noir, pinot meunier, and chardonnay are the classic varieties of Champagne, and are used in varying combinations in nearly all of his sparklers. Mawby grows more pinot noir than any other variety. Pinot gris is a variety that once was grown in Champagne, thus, he grows it because he likes the contribution it adds to blends as it offers a 'roundness' of flavor that complements chardonnay.
