1st segment of this weeks Show: Zocker Winery's rare domestic "Gru-Vee" from Edna Valley in CaliforniaChristian Roguenant

The Nivens' Paragon Vineyard, one of the first in the region, was originally planted by Jack Niven in the early 1970s. It became SIPTM Certified Sustainable in 2008, the inaugural year of the program. Twelve acres on the estate were planted to Grüner Veltliner for the Zocker project. With Zocker, Niven Family Wine Estates cements its reputation as an innovative California Central Coast wine company. Named for an Austrian word that translates as "Gambler," Zocker is the Niven family's first foray into making Grüner Veltliner, an Austrian white varietal rarely grown in the U.S. Winemaker Christian Roguenant went to northern Austria in 2006, and immersed himself in the Old World ways of planting and making Grüner Veltliner. The wine is New World sublime behind a very intelligent label. I highly recommended it.

John Niven, third generation winegrape grower in the Edna Valley of San Luis Obispo, joins us to discuss the family's history from Purity Grocery in the 1950s and '60s to winegrape growers overseeing 1,200 acres and five diverse wineries producing remarkably innovative wines 'with individual purpose.' From Baileyana estate wines from the Firepeak Vineyard, his Grandmother's idea, focusing on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to the cool climate Zocker California Grüner Veltliner; Tangent stainless steal fermented cool climate wines intersect pure flavor with alternative varietals; Trenza Spanish-inspired New World blends; and finally Cadre, a tribute to South Central Coast Pinot Noir. A few of my favorites include: Baileyana Winery, Firepeak Vineyard, 2005 Brut Rosé Cuvée 1909 Edna Valley Sparkling Wine, Baileyana Winery, Firepeak Vineyard, 2007 Edna Valley Pinot Noir, Grand Firepeak Cuvée, San Luis Obispo and Trenza Winery 2009 Rosado, San Luis Obispo County, 56% Syrah, 34% Grenache, 10% Albariño.
