First segment of this weeks Show: Old World Joins New World: J. Christopher and Dr. Loosen New Venture in Oregon Pinot Noir - Ernst Loosen
 

Old World recently joined New World with the formation of a new partnership between German winemaker Ernst Loosen of Dr. Loosen and Oregon-based Jay Somers of J. Christopher Wines. The new venture, Loosen Christopher Wines LLC, will produce wines under the already-established J. Christopher brand. The venture has purchased a 40-acre property for a new vineyard and J. Christopher Winery on Hillside Drive in Newberg, Ore. As winemaker for the joint venture, Jay Somers will be in charge of all winery operations. Ernst Loosen sees his role as that of an investor who supports the growth of the J. Christopher brand both financially by providing a dedicated facility and an estate vineyard and professionally by contributing additional expertise and Old World insights to the winemaking collaboration.

Second segment of this weeks Show: New J. Christopher Wines Vineyard and Winery in Newberg, Oregon Open for Tasting over Thanksgiving Weekend - Jay Somers

When Ernst Loosen met Jay Somers some years ago, they quickly realized that they share a similar taste and passion for Pinot Noir. Ernst is a lifelong Pinot Noir fanatic, and has been producing it at his J.L. Wolf estate since 1996, the same year that Jay launched his winery in Oregon. The two cemented their friendship in 2004 when Jay traveled to Germany to help the short-handed harvest crew at Dr. Loosen. J. Christopher Wines is a small winery, located in Oregon's Northern Willamette Valley, that specializes in Pinot Noir made in the traditional style of Burgundy and highly aromatic stainless steel fermented white wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Chardonnay that reflect the terroir and varietal from which they are produced.The philosophy at J. Christopher is to produce wines in an Old World style that puts an emphasis on focus, length and balance.

Third segment of this weeks Show: Vinifera Revolution is Still Young in Finger Lakes Region of New York - Peter Bell
 

Winemaker at Fox Run since the summer of 1995, Peter Bell shares owner Scott Osborn's conviction that the Vinifera revolution is still a young one. With proper clone and rootstock selection, trellising systems and cellar refinements, the world will begin to take notice of the superior wines of which the Finger Lakes region is capable. Born and raised in Canada, Bell began his winemaking career in Australia, where he earned a degree in enology at Charles Sturt University in New South Wales. Upon graduation he became assistant winemaker for Hunter's Wines in New Zealand, producing Chardonnay, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc and experimenting with Pinot Noir. For five years Bell was winemaker at Dr. Konstantin Frank's Vinifera Wine Cellars on Keuka Lake where he made a number of award-winning wines.

Fourth segment of this weeks Show: Fox Run Vineyards on Seneca Lake, Finger Lakes Region Produces Award-Winning Reserve Rieslings - Peter Bell

For more than a century the dairy farm that is now Fox Run was perched on the steeply sloping shores, overlooking Seneca Lake. The first grapes were planted in 1984 and the Civil War era dairy barn was converted to a modern wine-making facility in 1993. In 1996, farther up the slope a new facility was completed with state-of-the-art capabilities and view of Seneca Lake that is unrivaled. Situated high on Torrey Ridge overlooking one of the deepest parts of Seneca Lake is Fox Run Vineyards covers fifty-five acres of vineyards producing a remarkable range of fine wines. Behind the winery a vast expanse of vinifera vineyards produce award-winning Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. Plantings of Lemberger, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Gewurztraminer position Fox Run's future on the cutting edge of the Finger Lakes' wine industry.
