WineFairy chats with 'Wine Wars' author Mike Veseth; Ted Edwards of Freemark Abbey; and with Charles Atkins of 5 Points Cellars

Segment-1: Wine Books - Wine Wars by Mike Veseth is The Red in Black & White - Mike Veseth

01: Writing with wit and verve, Wine Wars by Mike Veseth (a.k.a. the Wine Economist) tells the compelling story of the war between the market trends that are redrawing the world wine map and the terroirists who resist them. Wine itself and the wine business as a whole are at a critical crossroads today, transformed by three powerful forces or "flights." Veseth begins with the first flight, globalization, which is shifting the center of the wine world as global wine markets provide enthusiasts with a rich but overwhelming array of choices. Veseth is the Robert G. Albertson Professor of International Political Economy at the University of Puget Sound.

Veseth was awarded the Washington Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in 2010. Wine Wars by Mike Veseth is a wine-lover must-read!

WineFairy chats about the great wines from Navarra and Ribera del Duero, Spain

Segment-1: Wine Travel - The KINGDOM of Navarra: a Blend of Super-Chefs, Medieval Castles, Good to Great Wines - Becky Sue Epstein

01: Navarra has grown grapes since the time of the ancient Romans, and its location between Rioja and Bordeaux has encouraged growers here to combine the best of both worlds in their quest for quality. The Navarra wine region lies between Rioja and the French border to the northeast. The region is famous for growing the classic grapes of Northern Spain—tempranillo and garnacha (grenache)—each having their native roots in Spain. Navarra has considerable plantings of the major French varietals—Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc—however, indigenous varietals dominate – with 70 percent of all plantings. Ninety-five percent of the wine produced in Navarra is red and rosé.

Segment-2: Wine Travel - Bodegas Ochoa Family Cellar Modern Essence of Navarre Region Wines Since 1845 - Adriana Ochoa

02: The Ochoa family has been linked to the wine of Navarre since the fourteenth century. Bodegas Ochoa has been a working winery vineyard estate for over six centuries, thus being one of the oldest wine producers in Navarre. The origin of the current wine cellar dates back to 1845, a date etched in stone at the old cellar. Adriana Ochoa has taken over as winemaker from her father Javier, considered the father of modern viticulture in Navarra, having headed up the region's wine research center before he retired and devoted full time to the Ochoa family winery. The currently available 2010 Viura Chardonnay has seven percent moscatel which makes it very aromatic with tropical fruit, freshness, a bit of minerality. The 2010 Rosado is a saignee, pink to salmon-pink color that smells like red wine, tastes red, with touch of strawberries especially in end palate and finish. A good choice with summer BBQ perhaps?!

Segment-3: Wine Travel - Ribera del Duero: an Extreme Climate Perfectly Suited for Quality Red Wines - Becky Sue Epstein

03: Like much of viticultural Spain, Ribera del Duero has a long history of winemaking. As far back as 2,000 years ago, there is strong evidence of grape growing and winemaking by the Romans. As early as the 16th century, the region began to establish rules governing varietals and quality levels. Located in Spain’s northern plateau approximately an hour and a half from Madrid, Ribera del Duero extends over four provinces of Castilla y León: Burgos, Segovia, Soria and Valladolid. Ribera, which means “river bank,” is defined in geographic and growing terms by the horizontal axis of the Duero River Valley; the Ribera region flows from both sides of the Duero, and benefits from the great diversity of soils deposited by the river.

Segment-4: Wine Travel - Ribera del Duero Bodegas Aalto is 100% Tino Fino Tempranillo - Javier Zaccagnini

04: It is ironic that one of the youngest properties in the region has one of the most prestigious lineages, but it is the case with Bodegas Aalto. A chance meeting between Mariano Garcia, former star winemaker of Vega Sicilia, and Javier Zaccagnini, former President of the governing body of the Ribera del Duero AOC, gave birth to this quality-oriented estate which produced its first vintage in 1999, a year after its creation. Each vineyard is harvested, vinified, and aged separately before assemblage just prior to bottling. There is no filtration of the wines following a lengthy ageing in barrel. Both the highly regarded Aalto and Aalto PS wines are available in the US. Javier Zaccagnini speaks to us from El Bulli Restaurant.

03: Roy Cloud had worked in the wine business for years, watching it transform from a retail backwater to a mainstream fixation, with a huge influx of consumers looking for wine with terroir. By a twist of fate, he found himself on a hurriedly arranged trip to France to persuade small-scale winemakers that he should represent their interests in the growing U.S import market. While Cloud's palate would be challenged in finding the hidden gems of the Loire and Burgundy, his real dilemma was the fact that he didn't speak a word of French. Enter Joe, his older brother. In To Burgundy and Back Again, Cloud presents a richly evocative account of their journey.

Segment-2: Wine Education - "Uncorking PR" Your Brand Message Depends on Quality of Story, Audience, and Delivery - Paul Wagner

02: "So What's Your Story?" "The hottest term in marketing these days is the brand narrative. This is a three-syllable word for what really matters, which is your story.... To do good marketing, your brand has to have a memorable story." Successful marketing takes diligent hard work. If the business owner wants to be the company spokesperson, is he or she prepared to "commit the time and energy it takes to be successful?" "Does the owner enjoy interacting with a wide range of people? And, "is the owner a gifted communicator who can really reach people on an emotional level?" Segment-4: Wine Events - Red Tape Limits New Customer Market Access and Ontario Wineries Ability to Grow and Prosper - Debra Marshall

04: An issue that is very important to the Ontario wine and grape growing industry is Market Access. In Ontario, wine is sold through the LCBO, Winery Retail Stores and Direct Delivery to restaurants, hotels & bars. In order to sell through the LCBO general list section, a winery has to supply large volumes of wine. Winery retail stores are limited to the location where the wine is produced for wineries who received licences after 1993 (small winery can only sell from its farm gate) and there are off-site winery retail stores that are held by a limited number of pre-1993 licenced wineries. Small to mid-sized wineries have a difficult time reaching new customers in Ontario. They need this to change to allow the industry to grow and prosper.
