01: Traci Des Jardins was raised in the San Joaquin Valley where she was influenced by her Mexican and French Acadian grandparents. Segment-2: Wine Education - Porter-Bass Family Dedicated Organic and Biodynamic Practices in Vineyard - Luke Bass

02: For Luke Bass, Winemaker at Porter-Bass Vineyard & Winery and Poco a Poco Wines, Biodynamics represents a complete departure from the paradigm of conventional farming. Conventional and Organic farming are driven by simple economic principles. If high levels of inputs (fertilizer, herbicide, petroleum fuel, etc.) are necessary to achieve the desired production then the practice is profitable. On the other hand, a Biodynamic farm strives to be self-sustaining by creating maximum outputs with minimal or no inputs other than labor. Luke Bass makes estate-grown Chardonnay, Pinot Noir & Zinfandel from Russian River Valley.

Segment-3: Wine Education - Littorai Wines Estate Winery in Sonoma Coast American Viticultural Area - Ted Lemon

03: Littorai's philosophy of winegrowing is inspired by Ted Lemon's years in France and is based upon the concept of terroir. Terroir based winemaking postulates that wine of a single place produced by a single estate, is the greatest expression of winemaking. The pinot noir and chardonnay grape varieties are uniquely suited to this philosophy. The property where the winery is located is farmed biodynamically and using only organically certified materials. It is farmed as a self sustaining, integrated and diversified farm. It is devoted to the mystery of wine, not the science. Littorai creates wines whose balance and proportion make them uniquely suited for dining and for great cuisine.

04: Becky Sue Epstein reports on Bordeaux En Primeur where "Trends in taste continue to evolve. As Bordeaux enology professor and consultant Denis Dubourdieu mentioned, for the past few years, wine writers have been complaining about higher alcohol levels in the wines here. Yet, he says that at tastings, the higher alcohol wines get the higher marks. What do we in the US drink? Well, what we should be drinking are the 'second wines' of the top chateaux the 'classified growth' chateaux. As the prices have risen, the number of potential buyers for their 'grands vins' has declined. Read more excerpts from Epstein.

3rd segment of this weeks Show: Wine Education: Albert de Vilarnau is 8th Largest Bodega Producer in D.O. Cava, Spain - Felipe González-Gordon Terry

The Vilarnau cavas date from 1949 and are located in the town centre of Sant Sadurní’ d’Anoia. They were purchased by the Gonzalez Byass group in 1982. Vilarnau is situated 6 km outside Sant Sadurni d’Anoia, in the highest point of the region, Espiells, some 250 metres above sea level. High altitudes contribute to a slower maturation of the grape, which produces wines with higher acidity. As most Vilarnau Cavas are aged cavas, this high acidity contributes to a more balanced aging. Protected from the cold winds of the Pyrenees by the Montserrat Mountains and in the south by the Serrelada coastline, the vineyard enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Most cava grapes in Sant Sadurni d’Anoia are grown on deep clayish chalky soils with good water retention.

"The further from the mainland you get, the more you feel you're on a separate continent, set out in the Mediterranean Sea, the center of the ancient world. Every province has its own character, and the wines are no exception. The newest standout is Etna, the province around the volcano, where wineries are springing up in this unique terroir, the winemakers lured by altitude, independence and potential. With red wines, producers make a range from international to modern unoaked to ancient styles. The white wines of Etna really stood out to me, their aromatics, crispness and minerality providing a vivid expression of the volcanic soils the grapes are grown in. Nearby is Sicily's only DOCG: Cerasuolo di Vittoria, the wine a blend of nero d'Avila and frappato, two indigenous red grapes."

WineFairy chats with Becky Sue Epstein on Emilia Romagna; & Felipe González-Gordon Terry on Spanish wines

1st segment of this weeks Show: Wine Travel: Emilia Romagna in Italy is the Land of Modern Sangiovese with a very divided history - Becky Sue Epstein

Becky Sue Epstein reports to us from Emilia Romagna where she tastes her way through new Old World Denominazione di origine controllata ("Controlled origin denomination") Sangiovese and white DOCG — Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita wines produced from the Indigenous Albana di Romagna in both a dry and Passito (dessert) version. According to Chef Mario Batali, "Emilia Romagna is considered by many Italians to be the culinary apex of the entire peninsula." Prosciutto di Parma and Parmigiano Reggiano hail from this region.

2nd segment of this weeks Show: Wine Travel: Emilia Romagna Rich in Food, Wine, Quality of Life - Becky Sue Epstein

Emilia-Romagna is an administrative region of Northern Italy comprising the two historic regions of Emilia and Romagna. The capital is Bologna. The area is home to about 4.3 million inhabitants. Emilia Romagna today is considered as one of the richest and most developed regions in Europe. It's also a major cultural and touristic hotspot, is a major centre for food and automobile production (including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Barilla), and enjoys a resort-destination coastline. Americans are familiar with sweet Lambruscos. In the future, we can expect more modern, drier, food-friendlier examples to be exported to the US.

3rd segment of this weeks Show: Wines of Spain: Beronia Rioja is classic Rioja  but in a New Traditional Way - Felipe González-Gordon Terry

Felipe González-Gordon Terry represents the fifth generation from González Byass of Jerez, Spain. It's not surprising that the family's mantra is 'A passion for the authentic' whether we are talking about the flagship wine, Tio Pepe Fino Sherry, Bodegas Beronia in the Rioja Alta region, or Vilarnau Cava produced at the new Can Petit winery on the outskirts of Sant Sadurni d'Anoia in the Penedes. The family celebrated it's 175th winemaking anniversary in 2010.

4th segment of this weeks Show: Wines of Spain: Bodegas Beronia Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva, Tempranillo - Felipe González-Gordon Terry

Bodegas Beronia has been owned by the González Byass group since 1982 but the land has been inhabited since the third century B.C. The winery itself is surrounded by roughly 74 acres of vineyard planted with Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo, Graciano and Viura. The range of wines encompasses every price-point for all tastes and budges with Beronia III a.C. at the top made from hand-picked 88% Tempranillo, 7% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo. The currently available 2004 spent 15 months in new American, French, and Hungarian oak casks, 80% of which was new. Enjoy. The wines are available nationally.
